Hernia Treatment

A hernia develops when tissue, often part of the intestine or fatty tissue, pushes through a weak area in the abdominal wall or groin. Some hernias cause few symptoms; others become painful or difficult to push back.

Understanding your care options

Use this guide to prepare for a conversation with your doctor. Diagnosis and treatment decisions depend on your individual clinical assessment.

01

Common symptoms

Look for a bulge in the abdomen or groin, aching or pressure, discomfort with lifting, coughing or straining. Sudden severe pain, vomiting, a tender bulge that will not go back in, or skin colour change needs emergency assessment.

02

Assessment & diagnosis

A clinician reviews symptoms and examines the abdomen or groin, sometimes while standing or coughing. Ultrasound or CT may be used when the diagnosis or hernia type is unclear.

03

Treatment options

Options depend on hernia type, symptoms and health. Monitoring may suit selected small, minimally symptomatic hernias. Repair may be open or laparoscopic/robotic, sometimes using mesh. The surgeon explains recurrence and wound risks.

04

How treatment may work

Your specialist will explain the planned procedure, preparation, anaesthesia or other medicines, expected setting and follow-up. The exact steps vary by diagnosis and treatment selected.

05

Potential benefits

Potential benefits depend on the condition and the treatment goal. Your doctor should explain the expected improvement, alternatives, limitations and possible risks for your individual situation.

06

Recovery & aftercare

Recovery varies with the procedure, your general health and whether complications occur. Ask about wound care, medicines, activity restrictions, follow-up visits and symptoms that need urgent review.

07

Approximate cost & insurance

Costs depend on the hospital, surgeon, room category, tests, technique and length of stay. Ask for a written estimate and confirm cashless eligibility, policy exclusions, co-payments and pre-authorisation directly with the hospital and insurer. Coverage is not guaranteed.

08

What to discuss with your doctor

Ask what type and size of hernia you have; whether monitoring is reasonable; open versus keyhole repair; whether mesh is recommended; expected recovery and lifting restrictions; recurrence risk; and warning signs after surgery.
